During the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, many of us are experiencing high amounts of stress. As your trusted dentist in Severna Park, MD, we want to keep you informed on how stress affects your dental health. Here are some things to look out for during this crisis:
Plaque and Tartar Buildup
Foods and beverages that contain high amounts of sugar and staining agents are more commonly consumed during times of high stress. Substances like hard-candies, potato chips, citrus fruits, sodas, coffees, and teas are all known to be hard on your teeth. They can leave behind sticky residues that, if left on your teeth surfaces, can harden into plaque and tartar. Patients should practice consuming these substances in moderation during this time to reduce their chances of tooth decay or discoloration.
Poor Oral Hygiene Habits
When our schedules are thrown off balance like they are now, it can be difficult for patients to know what to prioritize. Even while you practice social distancing, it’s important to maintain your oral hygiene habits. Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day. While this seems like a simple tip, these simple preventative measures go a long way in maintaining the health and aesthetics of your smile. We do not want to see our patients suffer from the consequences of neglecting their oral health after this crisis subsides. That’s why it’s just as important now as it always has been to take care of your smile.
